Federal Government Spending

Below is the comparison of the final budget for each president since the Carter Administration. What is striking is that though the size of the budgets have increased dramatically, (as has the national debt) the variation in the distributions has remained small. Sure, we see the gradual increase in Health Care and Pensions as the Boomer bubble moves into retirement, but there is no dramatic change from administration to administration. These charts were produced and copied from here, which is a great site for analyzing the income and expenses of federal and state government.

And here is a chart of the growing federal debt with the recessions and administrations labeled. Check your assumptions, I know I had to.

The Public Debt chart was found here at the Federal Reserve Economic Data site. This site provides free access to tons of economic and some demographic data.
